BYHAM THEATER
Phone: (412) 456-6666 |
|
|
 |
ABOUT THE FACILITY: |
Originally built as the Gayety Theater, the Byham Theater opened on Halloween night, 1904. It ran for many years as one of the country's foremost stage and vaudeville houses, with appearances from such stars as Ethel Barymore, Gertrude Lawrence and Helen Hayes.
The Gayety boasted pressed copper cherubs painted with a bronze patina, imitation gold leaf, stained glass windows, plaster columns and wainscot of scagolia, an Italian faux marble technique.
In the entry vestibule, note the original mosaic tile floor and the many bare light bulbs lining the ceiling, evidence of the advent of electrical lighting. Backstage, the theater was one of the remaining few to use sandbags and hemp ropes to work the scenery rigging until 1999 when a modern rigging system was installed.
The Fulton Theater Facade In the 1930s, the theater was renamed The Fulton and became a full time movie theater. The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust purchased the theater in 1990 and following the first of four planned phases of renovation, the Fulton was reopened in May 1991. It was later renamed the Byham Theater through a naming gift from the Byham family following the second phase of renovation in 1995.
The old lighted Fulton marquee has been restored by the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg and will be installed there as part of a theater exhibit.
The second phase of renovations brought new restrooms, box office, marquee, an elevator, lobby improvements and facade changes. In 1997, the Cherub Lobby was restored to its original splendor.
The third phase of renovation in 1999 updated the theater rigging system, enlarged the orchestra pit and provided new HVAC for the entire building. Excavation under the stage and seating area will provide space for future dressing rooms.
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust continues to address the needs of the Byham Theater. These types of renovations are driven by the contributions of its attentive supporters, and with ongoing support the Cultural District will continue to improve and develop.

CARNEGIE LIBRARY MUSIC HALL
Phone: 412-368-5225 |
|
|
 |
ABOUT THE FACILITY: |
Built in 1898, the Carnegie Library of Homestead was constructed by William Miller and Sons of Pittsburgh at a cost of $250,000. The second d of three libraries built here in the Steel Valley, the Carnegie Library of Homestead was built for use by the common man but adorned with grandeur and opulence fit for a royal family.
In Andrew Carnegie’s book Gospel of Wealth, he wrote, “The best means of benefiting a community is to place within its reach the ladders upon which the aspiring can rise.” With these words, and in deed, Carnegie spent over forty-million dollars to build 1,700 libraries across the nation. In Carnegie’s own estimation, the library at Homestead was one of the finest.
The building itself was not just constructed to house books but to showcase the works of skilled craftsman. Hand-cut Italian marble and beautifully painted murals adorned the walls setting the backdrop for intricately carved oak desks and cabinets. This place was truly Carnegie’s “Gift to the people.”
While people think of a library as a collection of books and periodicals, the Carnegie Library of Homestead was, and has been, much more to the community. Since the last stone was laid before the turn of the twentieth century, the building served as a place where the community can meet, learn and come together. Sports activities included boxing, wrestling, gymnastics, swimming and bowling while the library sponsored baseball, football and basketball teams. Academically, the library was home to chess clubs, scouting groups and classroom instruction for non-English speaking immigrants.
Andrew Carnegie’s vision is alive today as the Carnegie Library of Homestead continues its dedication to the community by providing a source of education and knowledge to the people of the Steel Valley.

COLONIAL THEATRE

|
|
 |
ABOUT THE FACILITY: |
The Colonial Theatre first opened its doors on January 29, 1924. Located in the heart of the city on Main Street, it quickly became a focal point for the arts. Owner Charles Baldwin proudly called it "New England's most modern and perfectly appointed theater." Over the years, the Theatre has hosted movies, vaudeville shows, operas and numerous community events. Some early highlights were: Metropolitan Opera star Rosa Ponselle singing four encores of “O Sole Mio”; Thornton Wilder reading from The Women of Argos; Amelia Earhart lecturing on the possibilities of cross-Atlantic air travel; and Maude Adams performing Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. By 1945, almost 20 years after opening, the stage no longer held actors in pursuit of their craft as it had done so proudly for the previous sixteen years. Instead celluloid movie stars captured the attention of audiences, and the majesty of The Colonial began to disintegrate over time. By the early 1990s, it looked like the only remaining historic theater in Keene might not survive.
In 1991 a small group of devoted Keene citizens decided that The Colonial Theatre must be saved. By 1993 they had established the theatre as a non-profit group and begun to articulate a mission. Their efforts resulted in hiring an administrative staff and obtaining $2 million from grants and private donations from the community to begin infrastructure renovations. By March 3, 1995 the restored hardwood stage was in use once again.
Since that time more than 350 live performances have entertained and enlightened audiences of all ages. Award winning films are shown nightly on the largest state-of-the-art movie screen in the region. In 2004 The Colonial Theatre was placed on the New Hampshire State Registers of Historic Places. As we begin our second decade as a not-for-profit organization we are proud to continue the tradition of excellence for which The Colonial is known.

FOX THEATRE

|
|
 |
ABOUT THE FACILITY: |
The Fox Theatre opened its door to the public on January 2, 1929 as The New Sequoia Theater by Ellis John Arkursh to show motion pictures. Touring Europe Arkush gathered all of his favorite architectural details from various venues to create the Moorish feel and style on the inside and the gothic feel on the exterior which was executed beautifully by the Reid Brothers of San Francisco.
Used mainly for motion pictures the theater was purchased by the Fox West Coast Chain only a few months after the opening and it continued to be used for movie attractions for a number of years until the theater was closed for renovations in June of 1950 for 4 months before re-opening its doors September of 1950 for live performances and shows.
After its renovations the theater became a popular venue for many incredible artists such as Vanessa Williams, Etta James, Bill Cosby, Neil Young, Melissa Ethridge, BB King and many others.
In 1993 the theater was inducted to the National Register of Historic Places and it is now getting ready for a Grand Re-opening to continue the legacy of the Fox Theatres and to bring life back to Redwood City. In 2009 the theater went dark and now in 2010 the doors will once again open to bring it back to life.
In the summer of 2010 the Fox Theatre Redwood City was purchased by local entrepreneurs Eric Lochtefeld and Lori Lochtefeld, along with Eric’s company Dream Careers Inc. Eric Lochtefeld had a dream of one day owning an entertainment venue like the Fox and Lori has a dream of helping downtown Redwood City reach its full potential on the real estate front. They are both extremely excited to bring the Fox Theatre back to life.

 |
ABOUT THE FACILITY: |
A symbol of Pittsburgh's river renaissance, the Gateway Clipper Fleet has grown from a one boat, 100 passenger operation to the five boat, 2,500 passenger fleet of today. Sailing from the Southern Bank of the Monongahela River at Historic Station Square, the Gateway Clipper Fleet sails all year and offers a wide variety of dining, sightseeing, and entertainment cruises.
The clean, blue waters are framed by lush foliage and award-winning architecture that make our city one of the most scenic in the United States. However, for the first half of the 20th century, the three rivers were not a pretty sight. Pittsburgh, the "Steel City", was known for producing tons of steel year after year. While Pittsburgh's steel industry played a pivotal role in the development of the United States, it also played a role in pollutingour rivers. The once beautiful rivers were now filthy. Something had to be done to restore the three riversto their natural beauty.

LEBANON OPERA HOUSE
Phone: 603.448.0400 |
|
|
 |
ABOUT THE FACILITY: |
Lebanon Opera House (LOH), an historic 800 seat facility with superb acoustics, is the largest proscenium theater in the Upper Connecticut River Valley. The Opera House is located within Lebanon City Hall, a fixture on Colburn Park in the center of Lebanon. Since its dedication in 1924, the Opera House has served a myriad of purposes as a venue for vaudeville, traveling theatricals, and community events, and more recently for musical concerts and school performances.
In 1951 Lebanon Opera House was converted into the town movie theater, until it was closed down at the end of the 1960s with no plans for its future. It was brought back to life in 1969 by Lebanon High School music director Ralph Bowie, who, realizing its significance, took down the movie screen and scrubbed, mopped, cleaned, carpeted, and painted his way into an era of enthusiastically received high school musical productions. Bowie was joined in his efforts by local impresario Jack O’Connell, and, in collaboration with Dartmouth College, they managed to lure several professional productions to the theater. A remodeling of City Hall in 1975 paved the way for the pre-Broadway run of Moss Hart’s Light Up The Sky. For the next 16 years, the Opera House continued to serve primarily as a venue for school plays and musicals, community groups, and municipal meetings, with an occasional loan to Dartmouth for a bigger production.
After several cycles of activity and dormancy, the City of Lebanon recognized it could neither manage nor care for the facility by itself. Lebanon Opera House Improvement Corporation was established by the City Council as a non-profit organization in 1991, dedicated to realizing the full potential of Lebanon Opera House as a multi-faceted community resource for the entire Upper Valley. In 2002, LOH successfully completed its most comprehensive physical renovation to date, as well as a year-long strategic planning process culminating in a detailed five-year business plan. LOH’s first major capital campaign (2000-2002) to fund theater renovations generated a groundswell of community support for the Opera House. More than 1,000 individuals, foundations, companies and other constituents participated to raise more than $750,000. The resulting synergy of physical improvements, heightened public attention and enhanced programming has significantly impacted attendance and utilization of the facility.
Currently, the Opera House hosts rehearsals and events an average of 280 days annually, bringing live arts experiences to over 60,000 people who participate in LOH-sponsored events, community arts organization productions, benefits for other local non-profits, educational workshops and student productions. There is hardly a single elementary, middle or high school student in the Lebanon School District who has not either performed or attended a performance at the Opera House. Over 70 days each year, Lebanon Opera House serves as the district's primary rehearsal and production space. Many Upper Valley non profits—including David’s House, Upper Valley Haven, Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth, LISTEN, Child & Family Services, and others—take advantage of LOH’s excellent facilities and sliding scale rental fees to produce effective fund raisers for their organizations. LOH coordinates the presentation of numerous productions staged by a variety of community arts organizations. Four of the most active—North Country Community Theater, NorthEast Shakespeare Ensemble, Opera North and City Center Ballet—draw over 15,000 patrons annually. Attended by 8,000 – 10,000 students and teachers each school year, LOH’s Youth Education Series (YES!) has established a prominent role in school curricula while providing classes the opportunity to work with world renowned artists in their own classrooms. The organization’s outreach program—Operation Open Invitation to the Arts—distributes of hundreds of tickets each year to Upper Valley social service agencies, enabling underserved adults and at-risk youths to attend live arts and cultural performances.
Throughout its colorful history—from meeting house, to movie house, to the active, year-round, fully renovated performing arts facility it is today—Lebanon Opera House has come a long way in 84 years. The Opera House’s recent renovations have been a catalyst for community economic development, leading a renaissance of Lebanon’s downtown. Economic impact studies conducted by the New England Council indicate that Lebanon Opera House now generates more than $5 million in collateral economic activity in the Upper Valley region each year. In the wake of significant post-renovation organizational growth, LOH’s mission statement was revised during its second strategic planning process in 2006-07 to more adequately reflect the organization’s broader purpose and business.

THE EGG
Phone: (518) 473-1845 |
|
|
 |
ABOUT THE FACILITY: |
The construction of The Egg began in 1966 and was completed twelve years later in 1978. The Egg was designed by Wallace Harrison for all the people of New York State and to accommodate many events and performances.
Architecturally, The Egg is without precedent. From a distance it seems as much a sculpture as a building. Though it appears to sit on the main platform, the stem that holds The Egg actually goes down through six stories deep into the Earth. The Egg keeps its shape by wearing a girdle - a heavily reinforced concrete beam that was poured along with the rest of the shell. This beam helps transmit The Egg's weight onto the supporting pedestal and gives the structure an ageless durability that belies its nickname.
The Egg houses two theatres - the Lewis A. Swyer Theatre and the Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre. Seating 450, the Swyer Theatre is used for chamber music concerts, cabaret, lectures, multimedia presentations, solo performers and a majority of educational programming. With a seating capacity of 982, the Hart Theatre is used for larger productions including musical theatre, dance and music concerts. Wrapping around fully half The Egg is a lounge area for the Hart theatre. This space is ideal for seminars, receptions, after theatre parties and small cabaret type performances.
The building's curved exterior defines the interior statement as well. There are virtually no straight lines or harsh corners inside The Egg. Instead, walls along the edge curve upward to meet gently concave ceiling light for celestial effect. The backs of performing areas are fanned - inviting one inward - providing an intimacy impossible in a conventional theatre. And throughout, walls of Swiss pearwood veneer add warmth and enhance the acoustics in the theatres.
Visually distinctive, yet ingenious The Egg is a beautiful synthesis of form and function. We invite you to use it for your organization - and hope you visit and enjoy it frequently.
